“I want to get out!” “I want to go hiking!” “I want to go climbing!”
Then Xiaomoyu is the place for you..
Easy to get to it’s just 2 buses from the centre of Kunming and takes about 40 minutes to an hour to get there.
Every time I’ve been to this spot I’m amazed at how beautiful it is. And every trip there’s been something new to discover. There’s a fantastic cave the more experienced climber can enjoy but for non-climbers like me it’s a great place to sit and cool off or stay the night. If you do decide to camp in the cave please take care while making a fire and make sure you leave it as you found it!
The last time we were there was September and the fields were full, with the crops ready for the harvest. It’s a little easier to walk around further into Autumn as the greenery starts to die down. You can climb to the top of the hill above the reservoir for a good view but mind the rocks and the thorny bushes!
On our last trip it was such a beautiful day that we decided to skip a long hike and followed the lead of the locals and went for a swim in the reservoir. In one word: WONDERFUL!
There are a few very small shops in the village for drinks and “interesting” snacks so your best bet is to take a picnic with you and enjoy the outdoors!
But how do I get there…
You can get bus 2 or 26 from the centre of Kunming, Xiao Xi Men and head to Huangtupo (黄土坡). It costs just 1 kuai to get there. Once you reach Huangtupo you need to jump on one of the little C buses. C62 or C63 that heads to the Bamboo Temple, which will cost you 5 kuai. Just tell the bus driver Xiaomoyu and he will know where to drop you off. The entrance to the village is another 10 minutes drive after the temple on the right side of the road. Once you get dropped of you will see an entrance to a quarry, you can either walk through and the road will wind round to the left and enter the village or before the quarry as soon you get off the bus you can follow a smaller road down to your left. This is the more scenic route! Follow the path and once you get further down you will see an entrance gate ahead, before you get to it, take the path to your right and follow it along the side of the fields. You can then cut across the fields on your left (if there’s nothing growing at the time it’s a lot easier) and you will be at the top of the valley above the village, then you can climb down and follow the fields till you get to the entrance of the cave above you on your left and the village to your right.
