Sky Sea Lodge – My Favourite Hostel in China

We discovered this place about 2 years ago and have returned many times since with family and friends. Sitting on the north east shore of Erhai Lake, Sky Sea Lodge has lovely airy rooms made from wood and fresh white washed walls. The shower and toilets are modern and clean. The best thing about this place is the garden and cafe that are full of plants, fantastic lake views and plenty of space to relax with a book. You can rent kayaks and bikes for day trips and the surrounding streets are wonderful to explore. Take a look at the fishermen’s homes and their catch and indulge in a crepe at Amigo Cafe, run by Frenchman Max and his lovely wife. You can also hike up the hills that surround the village, there are no clear hiking trails but you can find regularly used tracks left by the local farmers.

Shuanglang

You can get to Shuanglang (双廊) by bus, either going directly from the north bus station in Xiaguan or from Dali Old Town. You can ask at any hostel in the old town and they’ll direct you on how to get there, it takes about an hour. It’s a bit of a bumpy, dusty ride although they’re currently updating the road. This will make it easier to reach but it also means it may get too busy during the high-season, so while it’s still a challenge, go! And once you’ve made it, pull up a chair, sip on an icy beer and dip your feet into the cool waters, letting your worries drift out on the waves.
